Interaction with the team gives schools an opportunity to discuss plans for individual children where they may be experiencing challenging behaviour relating to social, emotional and mental health and seek advice around possible intervention strategies and avenues for further support. In a minority of cases a move of school may be appropriate and where agreement can be reached by all parties the School Support Team will facilitate this through the supported student moves process, allowing a ‘fresh start’ for the child and family involved.
Work Based Learning
North Tyneside Council’s highly-regarded Work Based Learning Programme is designed to run alongside the traditional school curriculum and includes a range of personal, practical and vocational training programmes. These are designed to complement classroom learning and specifically targets young people aged 14 – 16 who have challenges in attending formal education and are in danger of becoming NEET. There is also an enrichment programme available to schools from Year 7.
This programme gives young people the opportunity to learn from occupational specialists, providing experience in a chosen vocational area and giving valuable employability experience. Support will also be given to help build self-esteem and confidence.
Students can attend a provider for one full day per week which will be funded by the Work based learning SLA programme. Additional days can be requested where the cost would be covered by the school.
