In the morning pupils will be involved in our animal welfare routine – watering, feeding, and cleaning animal housing and fields.

Pupils will also be allowed to safely groom some of the animals, learning about the different species that live at Jarrow Hall and how all of their different needs are met. This all has to be done safely, and pupils will learn about the different PPE that is required for different jobs.

The focus of the sessions being on animal welfare and positive interactions with the animals, developing communication skills and a sense of trust and responsibility with the animals.

In the afternoons we have an environmental focus, using the 11 acre grounds at Jarrow Hall to learn about habitats for different animals. This can often involve building bug hotels, bird boxes, and hedgehog boxes and explaining how these things can support species to thrive within an eco-system. We can also look at and build bird feeders, dead hedging and carry out some planting activities.

If a pupil tends not to engage very well with the environmental sessions and if it is beneficial for the pupil we can be flexible and revert back to the animal based sessions in the afternoon to encourage and support pupil engagement.
