The Barn Joinery Workshop is a fully equipped woodwork shop and will give pupils a chance to work with other students in small groups to work on their own projects, build confidence and social skills in a calm, non-threatening environment.
Our courses are designed as an introduction to woodworking skills for students who wish to explore their ability to explore opportunities to become either a Carpenter or Joiner.
As well as a very practical vocational experience, we offer students the chance to work in an environment that supports their personal growth and development. Our expertise is based round working with the uniqueness of the individual and encouraging people to follow their own interests through projects.
We place a great emphasis on developing practical skills in our pastoral work.
These include:
- Health & safety in the working environment
- Power tool health & safety
- An introduction to wood machinery practical use and safety
- Work bench practice
- Use of basic hand tools, saws, planes, chisels and marking out instruments
- Basic joint construction, dovetails, half laps, mortise and tenons, mitres
- Frame constructions to demonstrate skills developed
- Architrave and skirting board fitting
- Locks and hardware installation
In addition to working in the workshop, we are developing a new outdoor classroom area which uses of recycled materials to create environmentally friendly eco-projects such as building a wind turbine generator, using solar power, and rainwater capture. This will offer the students an opportunity to learn about eco and environmental issues affecting us all and help them understand about reducing their carbon footprint and take better care of our environment.
