Growing Brains, Guiding Behaviour

brain development

Supporting young children can be joyful, rewarding, and at times overwhelming—especially when big feelings take over. In the Early Years, children’s brains are developing at an incredible pace, shaping how they learn, communicate, and respond to the world around them. This rapid growth brings curiosity and opportunity, but it can also lead to behaviours that feel challenging for both children and adults.

Understanding changes

Designed to give you information alongside tried and tested strategies Growing Brains, Guiding Behaviour training aims to help practitioners and parents to understand why children behave the way they do by exploring the science of early brain development. When we understand what’s happening inside a child’s developing brain, we can respond with empathy, confidence, and simple strategies that support emotional regulation, boundaries, and happier daily interactions.

You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of behaviour, insight into how neurodivergence and developmental differences may influence children’s responses, and practical tools you can use straight away in the classroom or at home.

What you will learn:

  • How children’s brains develop and the impact this can have on the way children behave.
  • How neurodivergence, developmental differences and other external factors can impact on children’s behaviour.
  • Practical strategies to support adults in responding to challenging behaviour.

Host a training session for parents

Following the success of our Inside the Sensory World workshops delivered to parents this term, the Early Years Inclusion Service is excited to offer another opportunity for families to learn more about their child’s behaviour. We would love to bring this training to your next parent coffee session in the Summer Term. If you’re interested in hosting, please contact jocelyn.kitt@northtyneside.gov.uk to book a date.
