PESSPA Trail and Challenge
PE, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) is at the heart of school life, it effects physical and mental health as well as behaviour, attainment, resilience, and a range of personal and social skills. Our team offers support, guidance, and advice to enhance the delivery of PESSPA. One of the most popular activities we run with local schools is Trail and Challenge.
What is Trail and Challenge?
This popular activity with schools is targeted at KS2, Years 4-6, but has also been successful with slightly younger, older and SEND groups. The events, of which there are 5 or 6 a year, run out of the Rising sun Countryside Park and introduce young people to range of Outdoor and Adventure skills which include, teamwork, cooperation, collaboration, communication, resilience as well as basic map reading and interpretation skills.
Navigate your way
Groups of pupils, assisted by an adult, use maps to navigate the park with basic orienteering skills to find control stations indicated on maps. These stations indicate where an orienteering kite and stamp are located, these are used to record accurately the station but build up as part of a challenge.
This requires the correct location of 16 stations over the 400-acre site, while having a limited time to complete the task, teams must plan, negotiate and revise the routes they have planned to collect the most stations.
Stress free fitness
This requires the correct location of 16 stations over the 400-acre site, while having a limited time to complete the task, teams must plan, negotiate and revise the routes they have planned to collect the most stations.
Once gathered teams submit record cards and are allocated scores along with the team names they have created while on route.
The principle is simple, a fun way to work as a team, with minimal adult help, to participate in healthy activities which build personal skills but social characteristics which are key to personal development.
