Talk for maths – How can oracy support teaching for mastery?

How can teachers design lessons that spark curiosity and deep thinking?
Do staff have a set of talk and reasoning tools that help pupils explain ideas, ask strong questions, and build confidence? This training session explores how to weave purposeful talk into everyday teaching using the OUP Talk for Maths Benchmarks.
Teachers will learn clear strategies that promote discussion, reasoning, and problem solving across the curriculum. The session includes hands-on tasks that let participants reflect on their current practice and test new approaches. Together, we will consider how to strengthen pupil voice and build thinking routines that support rich learning.
By the end, teachers will know how to plan for talk that drives exploration and deeper understanding in maths. Whether new to these methods or keen to refine them, participants will leave with practical tools to create a classroom culture where reasoning and curiosity grow.
