The Big Maths Party

On March 21, 2025, North Tyneside witnessed an extraordinary celebration of mathematics as 8,000 children from 35 schools across the region participated in the first ever Big Maths Party. Organised by our expert advisors at Education North Tyneside, the event aimed to ignite a passion for mathematics among students by exploring its presence in everyday life.
Where's the maths in that?
Themed "Where's the maths in that?", the day encouraged students to identify and appreciate the mathematical concepts embedded in daily activities. Utilising resources provided by Education North Tyneside, schools crafted immersive experiences that promoted observation and exploration. Children were making, singing, dancing, talking and solving as well as reading a range fabulous maths themes storybooks.
"There was something for everyone and the activities really met the purpose of the day. They were fun and engaging and the children have asked if they can carry on with some of the games since the party."
Tom Johnson, teacher at St Mary's Catholic Primary School

Maths in all walks of life
A highlight of the event was a series of videos featuring local professionals discussing the integral role mathematics plays in their occupations, demonstrating its practical applications beyond the classroom. The videos covered everything from engineering, dog grooming, managing a restaurant, being a dance teacher and more.
Hits Radio covered the event and played comments from the headteacher pupils at Amberley Primary School throughout the day!
Enhancing maths education
This initiative reflects a broader commitment within North Tyneside to enhance mathematics education through innovative projects.
Education North Tyneside offers various programs designed to support schools in delivering high-quality maths instruction. For instance, their "Promote High-Quality Mathematics Talk" project focuses on improving classroom discussions to foster mathematical thinking among students.
The success of the Big Maths Party highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in education. By bringing together children, teachers, and local professionals, the event not only celebrated mathematics but also highlighted its relevance in various career paths. Such initiatives are vital in inspiring the next generation to embrace the challenges and opportunities that mathematics presents.
Everything was provided to make the part successful. From bunting and posters to assembly sides and activity ideas from EYFS-Year 6. Everyone was catered for, and the resources provided were extremely high quality. You took the hard work out of party planning!
