Managing Transition in the Early Years

For Early Years educators, this time of year can feel particularly challenging. There’s the emotional weight of saying goodbye to your class, alongside summative assessments, report writing, sports day preparations, and—almost quietly but just as significantly—the organisation of transition.

For Early Years leaders, the scale is even greater. You may be coordinating the transition of more than a hundred children and their families. Some children remain within the school or nursery, others arrive from different settings, and some move on entirely. On paper, that sounds straightforward. In reality, it’s anything but.

We all want the very best for our children and families.

The Ofsted Early Years Inspection Toolkit and the EYFS Statutory Framework reinforce this, emphasising the importance of children moving “on seamlessly to other settings or schools” and ensuring that “assessment informs an ongoing dialogue between practitioners and Year 1 teachers about each child’s learning and development to support a successful transition to Key Stage 1.”

Managing transition can feel a bit like spinning plates while walking a tightrope. You’re balancing emotional needs, statutory requirements, communication with families, and practical logistics—all at the same time, knowing that if one plate wobbles, it matters.

So how do we truly get to know each child well enough to ensure their learning continues without interruption? How do we help children and families feel confident, familiar, and secure about where they are going—and who they are going with? That’s where we can help.

Join our online training session on Thursday 14th May 2026, 4pm–5pm.

We’ll provide a clear, practical checklist to guide you through the complexity, helping you move forward with confidence and clarity—so every child’s transition is as smooth and supportive as it deserves to be.
